This suburban village within the Borough of Wigan, Greater Manchester lies about two miles from Leigh, seven from Wigan and eleven from Manchester city centre. Lowton’s history is connected with Byrom Manor (ancestral home of the family of poet John Byrom). The area was associated with coal mining and manufacturing during the Industrial Revolution. (Beware, though! Sandy Lane is reputedly haunted by Joshua Rigby, a farmer who died in 1883.)
