Members of the Blakelaw ward community partnership have secured the right to open the first socialist post office in Britain. Two years ago Blakelaw’s local post office was under threat of closure and relocation. With the majority of the local population being elderly, and relying heavily on the services provided by the existing post office, the potential closure was a major concern for local residents.
The community have since set up its own charity trust and campaigned to save the post office. Not only has the partnership been successful in this plight, they have also secured agreement in bringing the post office into public ownership.
Opening in January 2016, the new socialist post office will be the first of its kind in the UK and will transform the way post offices work in the future. With the creation of 4 jobs and profits made from sales being invested back into the community and its public services, the launch of the new post office will be a real boost to the local area and residents of Blakelaw.
With such a strong sense of community and its very own charity trust, the future looks bright for the area of Blakelaw, and for those looking to become part of this forward thinking area of Newcastle Upon Tyne, there are some great properties currently on the market perfect for new families and first time buyers.
